HFCS Required Summer Reading for Grades 5th-8th

Dear Parents:

  In order to prevent students from losing reading gains made during the school year, we are implementing a mandatory Summer Reading Program this year for all students in the 5th-8th grades.  Students will be required to read two (2) books from the attached list and complete related assignments.  Assignments will be posted on the school’s website for your convenience.  Copies will also be available in the school office.

  Students may read and report on up to four books from the list over the summer.  Any such books and assignments will count toward completion of our new eight Book Report requirement for the 2011-2012 school year.  We are implementing this requirement to make reading uniform throughout the 5th-8th grades.   Books read in excess of the two book requirement will be credited in subsequent quarters, but no more than one per quarter.  All Summer Reading Program assignments will be due to your assigned Reading Teacher no later than Friday, August 19, 2011.

  Most books on the Reading List are available at the Tulsa City-County Library.  If you wish to purchase books, the Barnes & Noble at 41st and Yale has agreed to order a small supply of titles.  If you wish to purchase the following titles they must be ordered from the Ignatius Press at www.ignatiouspress.com

1) Olivia and the Little Way;

2) Olivia’s Gift

3) A Song for Nagasaki;

4) The Scarlet and the Black

           ***It is not mandatory that you buy any of these books***
